Make It Sparkle

Hey everyone.

How is it October and a month into Spring already?! That means we moved into our new home almost 9 months ago- Crazy! I remember unpacking box, after box and making a conscious decision to Spring clean regularly, ensuring the house is kept looking fresh, clutter free and manageable. I feel much calmer when our surroundings are tidy, so it is crucial for me to maintain organisation and household chores (especially) when working from home, to ensure my mind is clear and focused. My second family over at Homebuyers Centre WA have asked me to chat about my favourite spring cleaning products/ cannot-live-without-items, organisation tips and some simple ways to get your home feeling fabulous for less… Yes, less- because we have even managed to get our hands on some exclusive discounts from 10 awesome brands that I love and use in my own home- you can view them all at the bottom of this post.

Maintenance is key.

I’d be fibbing if I told you our home is perfectly curated and magazine worthy everyday. It’s certainly not- but it is kept fairly tidy and we all try to pack away/clean up after ourselves throughout the day. Getting into the mentality of, “it literally takes two seconds,” stops clutter building up and chores feel way more manageable because they’re not made into mammoth tasks. When it comes to larger cleans (like spring cleaning) I break down the duties into specific areas and tackle them over a few different weekends. This means I still get to enjoy the majority of my weekend with family and I only have to dig out the cleaning products targeting the related areas I’m working on. The same principle applies for landscaping and exterior!! When I notice a little weed sprouting or some dry leaf litter floating around, I’ll make sure they’re pulled out/picked up promptly so that the chore doesn’t manifest over time.

Organise and simplify.

One key aspect that helps me maintain a clean home is having everyone know where possessions belong. This is especially helpful for children who are primary school age and above. Knowing where their toys, clothes and belongings are, eliminates a tornado of mess when they are trying to locate something specific. Clearly label storage tubs and group together similar items- eg cars, lego, technology, crafts… then the same with clothing- shorts, pants, tees, long sleeve. You can also rotate your seasonal clothes by packing away bulky, winter garments that you won’t wear throughout summer. I relocate ours and put them in the wardrobe of our spare bedroom, but if you’re limited on space you could try vacuum bagging some items and temporarily storing them in your linen cupboard. This frees up a lot of space in our main wardrobes and the whole area feels less cluttered.

The Cull.

Go from room- to-room and ruthlessly recycle, donate or appropriately throw away any possessions that are no longer being used/eaten/worn/played with. Don’t stop at your wardrobes either, consider culling old makeup, skincare products and expired medications in your vanities (Children’s panadol, nurofen and spare sunscreen tubes are notorious for expiring in my household.) Also take a look at your current bath/hand/face towels and consider donating any spares to your local women’s refuge or animal shelter. Same goes for linen, bedding and cushions. You might be overdue for new pillow inserts, fresh sheets or a summer quilt so bag it up and donate anything you no longer require. Storage.

This category could easily fall underneath the ‘organise’ umbrella, but I think ‘storage’ deserves it’s own mention as well. Often we focus on elaborate storage systems and custom-built units to impressively store belongings, forgetting that nifty hacks can also make the world of difference to de-clutter your home. One handy idea that I utilise in our home, is that we each have a bamboo basket which contains our day-to-day hygiene/beauty regime products- this is particularly convenient if your bathroom vanity has doors instead of drawers. You can easily take the items in and out (all at once,) which leaves your cupboards organised and your bench space tidy. They’re super affordable and are also stackable which is another awesome space saving pro!!

Bespoke joinery is beautiful, but this option is simply not obtainable for everyone. Thankfully, there are so many furniture pieces with great storage solutions on the market. In my opinion, Ikea is the retail leader when shopping for affordable and readily available storage units like wardrobes, drawers, entertainment units, bookcases and wall storage cabinets. My favourite systems to consider are the BESTÅ, PAX, KOPPANG, ALEX and EKET. There are hundreds of online hacks around to personalise these ranges but they have also just released new colour/material/profile options for some of the BESTÅ systems and they look NEAT!!! Buffets, console tables and blanket boxes are also lovely furniture options, if you want additional hidden storage. By placing a blanket box or storage ottoman at the foot of your bed, it can enhance the overall room aesthetic, as well as provide a convenient storage option in your bedroom. Utilise it to fold away a clean set of bed linen and towels in, so they are easily accessible when wanting a fresh towel or swapping over sheets on washing day. Enhance the ambience.

Create an atmosphere that relaxes you. No doubt after a good spring clean, your home will be smelling fresh but here are a few more ways to enhance tranquility in your surroundings.

Draw back your curtains.
Open your windows and let some fresh air in.
Use natural cleaning agents with aromatic scents, especially on your surfaces and floors.
Light a new candle or burn an incense stick.
Flip over a few reeds of your fragrance diffuser.
Buy yourself a bouquet of fresh flowers or gather some foliage from your garden.
Turn on some of your favourite tunes.
Cleanse and charge your crystals if required.
Put a wrapped bar of soap or a fresh fragrance sachet in your chest of drawers.
Water and fertilise your indoor plants.
Frame a new family portrait.

Koh Spray Mop– To be honest I think the actual mop itself is pretty on par with other brands, howeverrrr, the pads are what seals the deal for me. Society 6 Compilation

Hey all,

Welcome to the back half of 2021!! Already!!

Today’s entry follows on from my previous ‘Artwork‘ post, because a fair few people have asked me to share some of my favourite artists on Society6. With a huge variety and saturation of affordable wall art online, I thought it would be nice to showcase some stand out sellers that have caught my eye over the years.

I use Society6 wall art a fair bit in the Homebuyers Centre display homes to ensure I meet budget, but still have the home looking full and beautifully presented. It is a fantastic platform to find a wide genre of styles, from abstract line art to still life photography, and everything in between. I personally prefer to purchase the ‘Art Prints‘ and have them framed them later, but framing options are available if you want to take the hassle out of organising it later. The only downside to their ‘Framed Prints‘ are the colour/ profile limitations and (depending on which size you’re after,) the white border does get larger. Overall, I am sure you’ll enjoy this round-up of my favourite Society6 stores and feel free to shop their collections by clicking on the header of each artist below.

AmberTextiles

Full of incredible illustrations and vibrant creations, Amber’s artwork has been a firm fave of mine for a while now. I used the caravan print in Huxley’s nursery and had it professionally framed by Demmer Gallery in Osborne Park. It makes a beautiful feature in an area of his nursery that has a more neutral approach.

CityArt

I love how CityArt has a variety of prints, with a cohesive colour palette. This makes it simpler for me to decorate different areas and know the home will have a harmonious flow.

Dada22

Quirky, fashion, femme type artwork- all of which scream style! Using posters with ‘people’ in them is great way of ensuring that the artwork has a point of difference and the same ‘style’ is not repeated throughout the entire house. I prefer a variety of subject matter eg- florals and botanics, abstract, people, paintings, shape/ geometric and line art, photographic etc.

BriBuckley

I’ve followed Brian’s store for almost a decade!!! When I first started out decorating display homes, I specified some of his illustrations in various children’s bedrooms. It’s great to see how far his career and whimsical creations have come.

Mauikauai

This photographer has so many vibrant, fun coastal prints available. I used the surf board print (below) in the ‘Cali’ Homebuyers display home and it was a beautiful feature in the space- Perfect for a growing child, teen or surf enthusiast.

MiaCharro

I only discovered Mia’s page today but it is full of delicately sweet illustrations that I will be using in the near future. The primary factor that caught my eye was her sketch style, but I quickly fell in love with the palette and drawn texture too. These designs are so versatile and not limited to an age bracket- I would happily use them in both a nursery and tween girl’s room.

KevinRuss

I have followed Kevin’s work for a really long time now. He captures the most beautiful, picturesque sceneries and native wildlife. The moody, forest tones have a comforting masculinity about them, that would make a beautiful statement in a boy’s bedroom or nursery. I also adore the ‘Winter Horse’ series and would specify this as a subtle addition to any living, dining or bedroom.

Nina Stajner

Oh my goodness! Nina’s illustrations are beyond adorable and this is why I love sourcing artwork from platforms like Society6. She only has a few designs available as wall art, but she also prints her creations on wallpaper and decor! Super cute!

Ingrid Beddoes

I have a bunch of Ingrid’s photographs saved in my ‘to use’ folder when the perfect project comes up. The pastel, low contrast tones featured throughout her work, emphasise the dreaminess of the artwork as a whole.

Paul Fuentes

Paul has a really cool Palm Springs style and all of his work is bold, fun and super impactful. I’m in awe of the colour palette and vibrancy in each of his images- they have me reminiscing of summer holidays!

ThingDesign

There are so many cohesively beautiful abstract prints in this store!! The mixture of cool and warm tones work harmoniously together to create tranquil and restful artwork.

Styling a monochrome bedroom.

I can’t believe it’s Feb already and this is my first post for the year! I’ve been a bit slack on blog entries lately, but I had lots of questions on my feed last night about products used in the master bedroom of the ‘Odelle’ Homebuyers Centre display home. I honestly don’t mind replying to each and every question asked, but it does consume quite a lot time after hours, so hopefully you guys don’t mind me whacking all the information in one ‘shop the look’ post.

If you love the monochrome look and want to create an inviting bedroom, try applying some of the below tips.

Use timber accents to create warmth. Adding oak alongside the grey, black and white tones will soften the space and make it feel more inviting.
Use enough timber to create harmony. For example, if you split the main image into thirds I’ve used the warmth of oak in each section (top, middle and bottom.) Top- the frames and pendant details, middle- the bedsides and bottom- the bench seat and tray. By repeating the use of this material, it ensures that the overall room feels balanced.
Add soft textures. Soft textures will soften the contrasting colour palette and create a warm, cosy space.
Repeat the textures if possible. By using similar textures throughout the bedroom it makes the space feel balanced (just like the repetition of timber I touched on above.) For example, The fluffiness of the native artwork has been repeated in the soft fringing on the bedding and the hide on the floor… which again is placed in their own ‘thirds grid.’
Add some greenery or foliage. By styling a small bouquet of flowers or foliage on a bedside table, it helps bring life into the space and also adds a pop of colour without being a ‘feature colour.’
Add a feature to the bedroom. Usually colour would be a point of interest within itself, so when styling a monochrome palette I would normally use a main feature and then a few smaller details that still add visual interest. I wanted the main feature here to be the 3m headboard because even though the design is pretty basic, the scale of it creates a lasting impression. Other features within the design would be the bold, contrasting artwork, the detailed handles on the bedsides, the ribbed pendants and woven bench seat. All these elements are textured which is why I have kept the headboard design and bed styling pretty simple.

First of all I wanted to thank you for all the love and messages on my previous post. It was really comforting knowing other women could relate in one way or another. So thank you, I was heart warmed by each comment and private message.

Today I’m going to share some really cute images from the girl’s bedroom I recently completed in the Homebuyers Centre ‘Norfolk’ display home. This room is super sweet and if you’re in Perth you can check it out in person at 4 Quinn Street (off Farrell Road) in Midvale. The opening hours are:

Monday and Wednesday 2pm – 5pm

Saturday and Sunday 12pm – 5pm

It’s a beautiful 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom home design, with an open plan living area, theatre, kid’s zone and large alfresco area. I have kept the furniture and decor selections light and bright with a fairly neutral colour palette and the occasional pop of blush. The girl’s bedroom is probably one of my favourite rooms because I love the blush, white and soft blue colour palette. The warm and cool tones work beautifully together and it creates something different, in comparison to the very popular blush and white scheme for a little girl. I will admit the soft blue product is quite hard to find so I will upload a ‘Shop the Look’ concept further down, with easy shopping links so you can find a majority of the product I have used. If something is sold out online, you may want to contact the store directly and see if it’s in stock somewhere close by because this job was bought and installed only a month ago (sometimes online sells out quicker than in store.)

Often I get asked where I ‘start’ when designing/styling a kid’s room and usually my answer is the art or wallpaper. In this case it was the Sara Winfield art but I also wanted a subtle wallpaper that didn’t take away from the print. I locked in a neutral star wallpaper from Wall Candy (in Perth) but the next step was to find a couple of other prints that complimented the Sara artwork nicely. I approached Little Design Haus to customise her ‘Scandinavian Flowers’ set, changing out the grey for blue. I adore the finished product and they work beautifully opposite the Sara art. From there, I hunted for blush and soft blue decor/bedding to create balance in this magical little space.

I also wanted to hang a canopy off center to create interest and fill the wall space a little more. I decided to break away from the usual brand I use and try a Spinkie Baby design. Oh my gosh, it’s so soft and pretty. Perfect if you’re wanting to create a dreamy girl’s bedroom or play area. You can choose either a gold or silver crown, or leave it off completely, so it’s quite a versatile styling piece. The Australian stockist is listed further down in the ‘Shop the Look’ section.

To keep costs down and work within my allocated budget I used affordable furniture and focused on spending more on cute decor/ styling pieces. The desk is from Adairs and the bed is from Fantastic Furniture (links below) so I thought these were great little finds that really helped me stay within my fairly tight budget. By watching what I spent on the large ticket items, I was able to buy some cool books from Jack and Willow as well as some gorgeous bedding from various stores below.
